High Speed DSL FAQ
How can I avoid additional storage charges?
Storage space or disk space, generally refers to the total amount
of space that is allocated to your account. It is made up of the
total quantity of all files currently stored on the server, including
all email, but especially large email attachments (high-resolution
images, large business reports, video files, etc.). The latter can
quickly consume storage space if you configure your email software
to keep your e-mail messages on the server. Additionally, if you
have a website associated with your account, storage is consumed
by the files related to your website.
Understanding how your email settings are configured, will help
you to avoid unnecessary storage fees resulting from an unmanaged
email box. Here's some tips for managing your email box that will
help you avoid additional storage charges.
- Don't Leave All Mail on Server: If you leave your mail
on the server, it will eventually fill up. If the storage space
allocated to your account goes over the quota, this will result
in additional storage charges.
- Configure your E-mail software: The default behavior
of all e-mail programs is to remove mail from the server once
it's been downloaded. However, this option can also be set to
leave mail on the server. There are some reasons why this may
be preferable in some instances, however if you should to set
your email program to leave messages on the server, you will
need to monitor your storage space closely to avoid going over
quota. If you currently have your e-mail software set to leave
mail on the server, but don't require this setting, change your
configuration to not leave mail on the server, or at least set
it to remove mail after a defined number of days.
- How do I change this setting in my E-mail client software? Please see
here for instructions on how to change these settings
for many popular E-mail programs.
- Set your Maximum Message Size: Another way to help
avoid additional storage charges, is to set a Maximum Message
Size in your E-mail
control panel. This will allow you to restrict incoming
message sizes. For example, if you're not interested in receiving
large E-mail attachments, you can set the maximum size you want
to receive. This setting will vary depending on your needs.
- Website Files: If you have a large website, you'll
want to manage the files that make up your website, and avoid
leaving any unnecessary files lying around in your web space.
Keep local back up copies of your website, and keep your website's
file space on the server lean and mean, removing any files that
are no longer part of your website. If you hire
a Web Designer/Developer, they can do this for you.
- What if I need more storage space? It is highly recommended
to purchase
additional storage if you plan on leaving your e-mail messages
on the server.
How do I get connected to my DSL account?
DSL accounts require that you log into our server with the correct
username and password. There are three main ways to do this: A “connectoid” is
created to connect to the server with the correct user information,
a router contains this information and maintains a constant connection
to the server via the modem, or the modem is set up with this information
and connects directly with the server automatically.
The first requirement of logging into your account is having a modem
that is “in sync”. This means that your modem is connected
to the phone line and detects a DSL signal on it. A light on your
modem will flash as it tries to synchronize with the DSL signal.
Once this lit remains solid, your modem has sync. This light will
be labeled
differently depending on your modem type; some examples are DSL,
ADSL, WAN, or Internet.
Once your modem has sync, if you use a router, it needs to be configured
to use a “PPPoE” connection with the correct user name
and password. Because of the variety of routers from the variety
of manufacturers available, Vaxxine cannot offer phone or email support
on setting up/configuring a router. If you need a router set up for
you, please bring the router and modem, with their power cables,
into the Vaxxine
office. Once a router is set up properly, assuming
all hardware is connected properly and functioning, you should be
online constantly.
If your modem is configured with the user name and password and
set to log in automatically, once the modem establishes sync, you'll
be connected. Not that all modems of this type have a reset button
recessed in the back. The reset button can only be reached by using
a thin object inserted into a hole in the back of the modem. Please
do not press this button! Doing so resets the modem to factory defaults,
losing all log in configuration information. The modem may need to
be brought back in for reprogramming if this is done. Since modems
of this type default to using a username and password to log in automatically,
you would need to bring it in for reprogramming, and what is called
a “bridge” if you want to install a router on the system.
The third way of connecting is to use your computer and a connectoid.

What does this DSL error number/message mean?
If you are getting an error message when you're trying to connect,
the best step is to restart the computer and try to connect again.
However, if the error occurs intermittently, it could indicate a
possible hardware or driver error. The most common error messages
that effect DSL connections and the recommended solutions are:
- 630 - The port was disconnected due to hardware failure. Restart
the computer and try to connect again.
- 678 - There was no response from server. Make
sure the sync light is on solid on the modem. This light might
be labeled
DSL, ADSL,
WAN, or something similar. If that light is off or flashing,
turn it off for ten minutes, power it back on, and see if the light
goes
solid.
- 691 - Access denied because username and/or
password is invalid on the domain. Make sure your username and
password are correct.
DSL usernames are formatted like this: dr0000vx@vaxxine.com (where
the “0” are the 3 or 4 numbers of your user name).
Re-enter your password as found on your Vaxxine account information
sheet.
If this still gives you the error, please contact Vaxxine Support.
- 769 - The specific destination is not reachable.
This could be due to a hardware failure in the network adapter
of the computer. Turn
the computer off, turn it back on again, and if the error persists,
you may need to have the computer and/or modem seen by Vaxxine
Technicians.
What should I do if my DSL won't connect?
The first step if you can't get your DSL to connect is to perform
what is called a “power-cycle” of the system. Shut down
the computer/computers using this Internet connection. Shut off the
router (if any, and this might mean unplugging the power cable).
Shut off the modem or unplug it, depending on the model. Leave everything
shut off for 10 minutes. There is a time delay between our DSL server
and your computer. Therefore, if you don't leave the connection off
for long enough, our server will not know you turned everything off.
When you come back online, it will think you're connected twice and
turn off one of the connections. Since only one of those connections
is current, you'll be knocked offline again, causing a vicious cycle.
Power on the modem again, and make sure the DSL or DSL Link lights
come on and stay solid. If they blink or do not come on at all, follow
the phone cable back to the phone jack. A DSL phone line should go
directly into the wall jack, not into a filter. If you are having
problems connecting, make sure to try the modem directly into the
phone jack and not into a splitter or power bar. Try disconnecting
and reconnecting the cable try a different phone cable, and/or a
different phone jack. If you still can't get a solid light, please
contact technical support. If, however, you do get a solid DSL or
DSL Link light, power on the router and/or computer. If you still
cannot connect, contact technical support.
Is my DSL connection always on?
This depends entirely on your particular hardware setup. To connect
to a DSL connection, you need to use a user name and password. Some
modems can store that user name and password, and therefore they
remain connected all the time. Other modems do not store the user
name and password, and therefore whenever you disconnect them or
power off/restart your computer, you'll need to connect to our service
again using what is called a “connectoid”. If you have
the latter type of modem and a router, the router can be set to dial
in for you, storing the user name and password you use to connect
to your DSL service. In essence, the router keeps you constantly
connected.
If my connection is always on, is it safe?
Try picturing your computer like a house, the Internet is everything
outside of the house, and your connection to the Internet is like
your front door. Obviously, if you leave your front door unlocked,
anyone that wants to can just walk in to your house. If you lock
the door, you're secure. However, in either instance, someone can
force their way in if they really want to. In terms of computers,
the Internet,
and Security, there is no such thing as a 100% “hack-proof” system.
If you get a hacker that is smart enough, they can use your computer
maliciously no matter what you have installed. You shouldn't just
leave your computer unprotected. Most home users will never have
a hacker attack their machine, but might get infected by things that
are even worse. Malware,
spyware, adware and viruses are the greater
threat. You can protect yourself by using the Microsoft Firewall for Windows XP and Vista systems, and by installing and keeping up-to-date
anti-virus
software and anti-spyware
software. Such programs as AVG
and Spybot and Ad-Aware are free for home users, and the quality
of protection is excellent. You can also choose to buy these programs
for advanced features and protection.
What is a Router?
A router, as it relates to DSL, is a device that allows one or more
computers to connect to the same DSL account at the same time either
by being connected through Ethernet cables or wirelessly. Routers
allow computers connected to them to talk to one another, with or
without an Internet connection. This can sometimes cause confusion
if there is a connection problem as the computer will be connected
to the router, not the Internet, and therefore will tell you it has
limited or no connectivity. A router tells your DSL modem when to
connect and what user name and password to use. If you're having
a problem connecting to the Internet, it's a good idea to turn your
modem and router off for ten minutes.
Because of the wide variety of router products available, Vaxxine
technical support cannot support routers over the phone. Please refer
to the documentation provided by your router manufacturer or bring
the modem in to be set up.
Dial-Up FAQ
What does this Dialup error number/message mean?
If you are getting an error message when you're trying to connect,
the best step is to restart the computer and try to connect again.
However, if the error occurs intermittently, it could indicate a
possible hardware or driver error. The most common error messages
that effect dial-up connections and the recommended solutions are:
- 630 - The modem was disconnected due to hardware failure. Restart
the computer and try to connect again.
- 633 - The modem is already in use or is not
configured for dialing out. This is commonly seen on new computers
or new modems. A location
maybe needed. Go into control panel, look for Phone and Modem
Options (or simply Modems, depending on your version of Windows),
and set
the modem up, following the instructions that should come up.
- 678 - There was no answer. Restart the computer
and try to connect again. This is also an error that is returned
for driver failure
on the modem. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the driver
for the modem.
- 680 - There was no dial tone. Confirm the line
is not in use. Make sure the phone cable is plugged into the correct
port on the back
of the computer. If there are two ports, make sure it is in the
one labeled“line”. Also, make sure the phone jack and
cable are in working order.
- 691 - Access was denied because the user name
and/or password were invalid on the domain. Please confirm your
username and password
are correct and formatted properly. Passwords are case sensitive.
- 692 - There was a hardware failure in the modem.
Restart the computer and try to connect again.
- 756 - This connection is already being dialed.
This means that your computer is or thinks it is already dialing.
Either cancel the connection
trying to dial or restart the computer and try to dial again.
- 797 - The modem could not be found. Restart
the computer and try to connect again.
Email FAQ
What's an email client and how do they work?
An email client is a program that downloads your email off our server
and saves them on your computer. Picture email like regular letter
mail. Our server is like a post office. An email client is like a
mailman. It goes to the “post office”, gathers your “letters”,
and brings them to your “door”, or your computer. Some
popular email clients include Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook
Express, Incredimail, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Eudora.
How do I set up an email account?
Setting up an email account in an email client is very similar in
almost every program available. For this example, we'll use one of
the most popular programs, Outlook Express:
| Set up Email account
in Outlook Express: |
- Open Outlook Express (you do not need
to be connected to the Internet to set an email up)
- Click on Tools from the main menu
- Click on Accounts
- Click on Add and select “Mail”
- Type in your Display Name (this is what people will see
as your name when you send them an email; as such, what you put
down here is entirely up to you), click next
- Type in your full email address, click next
- Make sure the drop down menu says POP3
- Type in under Incoming Mail Server: pop.vaxxine.com
- Type in under Outgoing Mail Server: mail.vaxxine.com
- Click Next
- Make sure Account Name has your user name
- Type in your password
- Make sure remember password is the only check box selected,
click Next
- Click Finish
|
What is WebMail and how do I use it?
WebMail is a feature that allows you to check your email from the
Vaxxine homepage. By simply going to webmail.vaxxine.com
and inputting your user name and password, you can check any email you
have not already downloaded using an email client.
When you log into WebMail, you may be prompted to perform inbox
maintenance. This is a personal preference, and you can choose to
perform the maintenance or skip it. This prompt will reoccur approximately
once a month. Once in your inbox, you can see your messages. From
here you can chose to click on the “From” or “Subject” lines
to get into the email messages.
WebMail is also a good tool to use when diagnosing why you cannot
download your email if you are on dial-up. If you have a large email,
you can read it in WebMail, then delete it, and you should be able
to download the rest of your email. To delete an email in WebMail
with the message open, click on the delete button at the top of the
message. To confirm the delete, click the “Remove Deleted” link
on the upper right hand side of the inbox view. To delete an item
from the inbox view, put a checkmark in the left hand column by left
clicking the box, then press the delete link at the top of the page,
and confirm the deletion by clicking the remove deleted option on
the right hand side.
What is the Email Control Panel and how do I use it?
The Email Control
Panel is a powerful tool for deciding how your
email is going to come in, from who, and how much. You can access
the email control panel from here https://client.vaxxine.com/email_control/.
Log in with your email user name and password.
From here, you have
various tabs with different options:
Spam & Virus
From Spam & Virus, you can enable or disable spam and virus
filtering. If you enable this, you are telling our email servers
to scan your emails for viruses and spam, and take the selected action.
Viruses are removed automatically. Please remember that no virus
scanner is perfect, and it is always wise to protect your own system
with
a virus scanner, as well. You can choose what our system does with
suspected spam emails. The choices are discard or tag.
The discard setting means that you will not get the email at all,
or any indication that an email was sent and discarded as spam. If
you select the tag option, the email will come through, but the subject
line will have the word “spam” added. In the email will
be an explanation why the email was marked as spam. Normally, messages
that are not sent as plain text are marked as spam.
Also on this tab are the Whitelist and Blacklist options. Here,
you can add or delete email address to these lists. Whitelisted email
address will never be marked as spam or deleted, whereas blacklisted
emails always will be.
Max. Message Size
This useful tab allows you to chose the maximum size of the message
attachments sent to your account.
